Miles Davis. Tutu Amandla Doo-Bop Rubberband. Miles Dewey Davis Jr. Book Category. There's a nice piano interlude, then Davis restates the melody. The track ends as it had begun, with Jones' slinky piano lines playing around the melody while the rhythm section restates the opening theme. No point in doing a detailed play-by-play of all five tracks: Leonard Feather does that on the liner notes typical of the times complete with chords. Just listen for Miles' playful "Is that what you wanted Alfred?

This is neither a milestone recording nor an essential for every jazz collection, but it is among the most easy-to-love jazz albums. The Classic jacket was authentic to the original in that Blue Note did not originally produce a separate jacket for the stereo release.

The jacket back had Blue Note , the original mono catalog number. Look: while some have been critical of some of Classic's classical reissues, Bernie Grundman is a jazz fanatic who acquired his cutting chops doing jazz titles. I think these gram Quiex SV-P reissues sound superb by any standard. They are not bright or edgy, nor are they rolled-off and warm sounding--and nor is my original, though it's been played probably or more times.

I think that with these latest Blue Note jazz titles, Classic and Grundman have gotten to the essence of what's on the tapes and what Rudy Van Gelder intended them to sound like. The original is a bit "bigger" sounding and somewhat airier, but the differences are neither epic nor critical.

They are bright on top, very similar to the sonic signature of the Classic Records Led Zeppelin reissues. If you downloaded those snippets published here you know what I mean. Considering that one was mastered more than 50 years ago and one was mastered within the past year or so, that tape is in insanely good condition given its age.

So why should owners of the original or other reissues buy this version? How is that possible? This reissue cut from the original tape sounds takes the album from one that sounds underwater to one that will float your Blue Note boat! Both of these reissues are highly recommended but if you are choosing one, get the Maiden Voyage.

Are the MM versions of these better overall then the AP versions? So many choices, if you had to purchase just 1 version of both records, what would they be?

Interestingly, both were mastered by Kevin Gray. Before the re-wiring, Kevin Gray could best be described as a "cable-denier". After the update he became an instant believer. Then the electronics were swapped out. That's how progress works. The MM packaging is also far superior. The AP 45s were before AP "got religion" and started turning out beautifully packaged records. If you could clarify, I'd appreciate it. My understanding is that the original tape had yes previously been lost but not sure when.

Certainly by the time of every reissue I've heard which is all that I've heard had been pressed. I've never heard an original I'm going to check with Joe and Ron for clarification. Something' Else is a non essential record? You spent the first half of your write-up pointing out all the reasons why it is essential. The sound is rating from you is a 9? He met the challenge with a long solo that just about knocked Pettiford off the stand.

Soon the word spread around town, and before many days had passed Cannonball's recording career had begun. By the following year he had earned enough acclaim to enable him to renounce the academic life in favor of a full-time jazz career, touring with his own quintet.

Julian Cannonball Adderley the name has nothing to do with ammunition; it is a corruption of cannibal, a nickname given him in tribute to his healthy appetite was born September 15, , in Tampa, Fla. His music studies at high school and college in Tallahassee between and '48 gave him a solid background first on trumpet, later on various reed instrument He has been a bandleader off and on for the past decade, generally as a sideline during his years at Dillard High, and in , while he was in the Army, as leader of a large dance band as well as a small group.

During a recent television appearance, when he was introduced as a representative of bop in the NBC educational series The Subject Is Jazz Cannonball was interviewed concerning his original reaction to Bird. When I first heard Bird, I knew immediately that that was it.

His style was completely original, far ahead of anything I had heard, and his harmonic sense was unorthodox. Despite the apparent disparity between the hard-hop approach of Cannonball and the supposedly cool personality of Davis, their collaboration Adderley broke up his own quintet to loin Miles in late seems quite logical in the light of Miles' own background, since he was a partner of Bird himself in the Parker quintet during its early years and can be heard on many of Bird's earliest and greatest records.

It seems useless to add anything about the contribution to jazz of Miles, probably the most influential trumpeter alive in terms of impact on the present musical generation. What he had learned originally from Clark Terry and others in and around St.

  2. Somethin' Else is, to me, the most exciting of the five mood-evoking tracks in this set. It establishes at once, and sustains throughout its considerable length, a certain mood of restrained exultancy, a low-glowing Davis fire that burns contemplatively until stirred to even greater warmth by the embers of Adderley's stimulation.
  3. Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley (September 15, – August 8, ) was a jazz alto saxophonist of the hard bop era of the s and s.
