Never Like This Mark W. Adrift on a Star E. Vic Damone feat: Jimmy Williams. He met Tommy Dorsey through his work with Joe Haymes. Following the Dorsey Brothers split in , Tommy had yet to form an orchestra; he used the Joe Haymes Orchestra for his first engagement as a solo conductor.

Weston joined Dorsey as chief arranger in , holding the position until He changed his name from Wetstein to Weston after his arrival in California. Weston met Johnny Mercer while working for Paramount in ; Mercer, who was preparing to start Capitol Records , wanted Weston to write for his new company. Paul wrote, arranged and directed Mercer's "Strip Polka" - the first arrangement written for the new label on April 6, No union musicians could record for any record company, but were able to play for live engagements and radio shows; the issue which prompted the strike was regarding record companies paying royalties to musicians.

While the older, more established record labels were able to do this, the newly formed Capitol had no opportunity to do likewise.

The strike brought the new company to a standstill until Johnny Mercer began his radio show, Johnny Mercer's Music Shop , in June In , he became the company's music director. When appointed, Weston was the youngest musical director for any major record company.

Besides his work at Capitol, Weston did conducting for many radio shows during this time. It could be an enhancement to living but subtle enough not to stifle conversation. Paul Weston and Jo Stafford were married on February 26, ; the couple had two children, Tim born , [23] and Amy born In Weston was named musical director for NBC-TV , a position he held for five years, [2] [3] a founding member and the first president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences , [1] [7] [28] [29] [30] and half of a recording duo that the whole country was talking about.

Paul and Jo did a skit at their parties where he would play the role of a simply horrible lounge pianist and she would vocalize in off-key melodies to the tunes he tried to play.

He went public with his portion of the act at a Columbia Records convention, where it was an instant hit; the couple agreed to do some recordings, calling themselves Jonathan and Darlene Edwards. Weston was concerned he might not be able to fill an album with the performances of Jonathan Edwards, so he asked Stafford to help. The vocal for I Love a Piano was provided by Kaye as the pair started the television show on March 25, The original idea of honoring those in the recording industry came from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in Their plan was to propose bronze sidewalk markers to be placed on Hollywood Boulevard the beginning of the current Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Weston was one of the men named to this committee by the Chamber. The committee executives decided all those who had sold a million records or a quarter million record albums during their careers would be candidates for the bronze star markers. As they continued their research, the men on the committee realized that many very important people in the recording industry would not qualify for this type of recognition.

This realization prompted the founding of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, whose purpose was to create an award for recording artists. It became known as the Grammy, and the first awards were given in He co-wrote " Shrimp Boats ", published in , which was popularized by Jo Stafford. One of Weston's songs made the tiny town of Hana on the island of Maui a household word. In , starting at about CL, the album cover logo changed again, with the long upright box logo giving way to a shorter upright box with the word "COLUMBIA" in a horizontal box to the left of the upright box.

Again, the changeover took place gradually due to earlier printing of later number album covers. Albums on this page had the "six eye" label, with the deep groove far left. Promotional albums had a white label with red print near left. Damone did limited acting on television in the early s. In the summers of and , Damone hosted a television variety series on NBC called The Lively Ones , which showcased current jazz, pop, and folk performers, as well as comedians.

Damone's other notable television work during this time included three guest appearances from to on CBS's The Judy Garland Show. In , Damone next moved to Warner Bros. On Warner Bros. In , Damone started playing Las Vegas casinos as a performer, and although he had to declare bankruptcy in the early s, he earned enough as a casino performer to clear up his financial difficulties. He extended his geographical range, touring through the United States and the United Kingdom , and as a result of his popularity, decided to record some albums again for RCA.

Ruddy , had the role stripped when Francis Ford Coppola became director and awarded the role to Damone. His final album was issued in , with other albums being repackaged and re-released. In , Vic decided to release some previously unreleased material and formed Vintage Records with his son, Perry Damone. He recorded over 2, songs over his entire career.

He garnered new fans following the launch of the Vic Damone website www. One of his final public performances was on January 19, , at the Raymond F.

Damone suffered a stroke the same year and subsequently retired. Damone dedicated this performance to his six grandchildren, who had never seen him perform. But, you know, my six grandkids have never seen me on stage. It will be the first time. I will introduce them. It's going to be exciting for me. Rest in peace, Mr. But they have the crookedness of the Russians with the entitledness of the Italians.

I sang along and thought it was hilariously funny. Sad the music from the likes of Damone and his contemporaries is associated today by younger generations as the soundtrack for mob movies. Most of the Italian singers ended up recording it at some point.

However, he quickly learned the language by listening to the radio. That experience hepled shape his future. He became a longtime radio host in Arizona. Damone suffered a mild stroke in but recovered and retired in after a farewell tour that included appearances at the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall.

He came out of retirement a decade later to give one last performance in Palm Beach, Fla. For anyone old enough to remember the age of phonograph records, the velvet baritone of Vic Damone was an unforgettable groove in a soundtrack that also included Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Tony Bennett, singers who arose in the big band era and reached peaks of popularity in the s.

Damone, a decade younger than Sinatra, never quite became the pop music institution that the others did. And he proved durable.
